Decarbonising the Energy Sector in the GBA via Regional Collaboration

Day 1 - 5th Oct | 11:30 - 12:10

Location: Sustainable Resources Theatre

Decarbonisation

Overview

From the latest IPCC Scientific Basis report findings, the urgency to decarbonise our energy system and peak our carbon emissions as soon as possible has reached new heights. This panel will share their insights on how collaboration at home, within the Greater Bay Area, can facilitate the urgent decarbonization of the energy systems in the region.

Learnings

  • How can key economic regions like the GBA lead China’s emissions peaking, accelerate long term carbon neutrality and stimulate job creation and economic benefits?
  • Most major urban centres such as London, New York and Sydney draw on their hinterland for the resources necessary to decarbonise. What opportunities are there for regional cooperation, such as for Hong Kong, to leverage more GBA or other regional collaboration?
  • What policy and financial tools are needed to facilitate energy decarbonization?
  • How can we create an environment to develop the channels and talent to enable collaboration on energy?

Post Event Actions

  • Build climate change & energy awareness by calculating your annual energy carbon footprint
  • Consider purchasing Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) and/or carbon credits to make your year’s use of energy carbon neutral
  • Purchase products and services that are less energy or carbon intensive
  • Express your desire and support for carbon neutral energy to Government, business and the community

My research is in the area of energy economics with a focus on policies that contribute to the sustainable development of the society. The main objectives of my research are two folds: 1) investigation of effectiveness of energy policies under implementation or discussion, which will lead to 2) the development of sustainable energy policies to tackle greenhouse gases emissions and global climate change.
