This session will discuss how Hong Kong companies and consumers are faring in the fight against food waste. Participants will see new roles they can play at work and at home
Learnings
- Understanding the environmental, social and business case for reducing food waste
- The importance of data and measurement being the first step to action
- The relationship between food waste and sustainable development
- How technology can help the challenges of transporting and storing food waste plus other recyclables
Post Event Actions
Knowing the financial, social and environmental benefits of reducing food waste:
- Undertake a food waste audit at work (and at home) to identify key reasons and sources of food waste
- Implement steps to reduce generating food waste
- Ensure any edible food surplus is efficiently identified then safely and sustainably redistributed to those in need
- Educate colleagues and friends about the difference before “Best Before” Dates vs “Use By/Expiry” Dates
- Redirect any non-edible food waste away from landfill and instead to feeding animals of making compost (e.g. O-Park)

Merrin is a facilitator and connector. He has a wide range of international experience working for Government Departments, SMEs, international companies and NGOs in stakeholder engagement roles, quality assurance and sustainability.
Utilising his land surveying expertise and experience in delivering experiential leadership learning programs on sustainability with a problem solving engineer’s mind, he is able to come up with alternative scenarios for client issues.

Gabrielle Kirstein is the Chief Executive Officer of Feeding Hong Kong, a registered charity with a mission to fight hunger in Hong Kong and reduce the amount of quality food being sent to our city’s landfills. Feeding Hong Kong achieves this by collecting high quality food that would otherwise be thrown away and redistributing it to frontline charities feeding people in need.
Gabrielle started her career at the international advertising agency Bates and their integrated communication consultancy 141 London. She moved to Hong Kong in 2003 and continued her career in communications and events with Euromoney Institutional Investor, The Economist Group and others, until founding Feeding Hong Kong in 2011.
Gabrielle is a Board Director of Redress, an environmental NGO working to reduce waste in the fashion industry and co-founder of The Redress Design Award, Redress’ flagship programme. She holds a BA in English Literature from Durham University and MSc in Development Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies.

Mr. Lawson Lau is the Executive Director of Cornerstone Technologies Holdings Limited. Prior to founding Cornerstone Technologies, Lawson spent over 19 years in the construction industry, primarily on product management and business development.
Lawson runs all facets of the business and oversees Cornerstone Technologies’ innovation efforts in EV (Electric Vehicle) charging, sustainable energy and IT solutions starting from 2016.
