Location: Sustainable Transformation Theatre (Keynote)

Decarbonisation

Overview

Nature-based solutions provide an untapped opportunity to store and reduce carbon while boosting economies and communities. We must invest in and scale up nature’s proven pathways to tackle climate change.

Learnings

  • Nature-based solutions can provide up to 37 percent of the emission reductions needed by 2030 to keep global temperature increases under 2°C.
  • Using only cost-effective solutions, nature’s mitigation potential is estimated at 11.3 billion tons in 2030—the equivalent of stopping burning oil globally.
  • Many natural climate solutions offer additional benefits, such as water filtration, flood buffering, improved soil health, protection of habitat and enhanced climate resilience.
  • Mounting evidence suggests that there needn’t be a contradiction between protecting our ecosystems and meeting the growing demand for natural resources.
  • Case studies from Asia Pacific and how Hong Kong is a critical player in this space as a leading global city surrounded by nature
