Overview

Sustainable school buses is one of TASS’s four areas of focus for systems change. This workshop will explore the practicalities of implementing low carbon fuel (biodiesel) in school buses in HK drawing on the experience of our member schools and their students and our partners.

Learnings

  • Introduction to biodiesel as an ultra-low carbon fuel
  • Case studies of biodiesel in school buses in other cities
  • Discussion of systems level challenges for biodiesel in HK and how to overcome them
  • Opportunities for schools and their bus companies to innovate and lead the way

Anthony Dixon is a renewable energy and sustainability expert. In addition to founding TASS, Anthony is the founder of Helios Renewable Energy – a solar energy company, and Metanoia – a consultancy working with schools to make a difference to the sustainability of their campus and community through practical, accessible and effective solutions that also educate and empower students.

My Sustainability Goals for 2022:

Schools leveraging their collective influence to catalyse systems change in four key areas of environmental impact – school buses, school uniforms, school food and school buildings.

Steve has over 20 years’ of experience at Senior Management/Director level within the public transport sector. Prior to joining STS, Steve worked in a variety of roles with Virgin Atlantic Airways, National Express and has been employed for the past eight years by Serco Middle East. During Steve’s time with Serco he developed new transport services, advised and introduced new university student transport systems in Al Ain, and has worked closely with the RTA’s Public Transport Agency supporting the introduction of the bus and rail networks. Steve is a UAE committee member for the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) and responsible for raising the awareness how the CILT can provide vocational development within in the public transport sector.

Having founded the first biofuels refinery in the Middle East over a decade ago, Karl is the acknowledged regional expert on supply chain sustainability and biofuels. Karl and his companies have won many domestic and international awards in recognition of their pioneering work. Today, his Dubai and Abu Dhabi based company Neutral Fuels, provides locally produced biodiesel to over 500 school buses and also uses a unique fuel efficiency app to further reduce fuel usage and carbon footprint.

Brought up farming in southern Ireland and holding a degree in Zoology from Royal Holloway University in London, Geoff spent 15 years as a director of Agrilife Ltd., which specialised in the management of organic wastes from water treatment and the food industry, and provided soil, water and nutrient management consultancy to the agricultural industry. Geoff started teaching in England in 2013 and he moved with his family to Green School Bali in 2019 where he teaches High School Science, Practical Arts and is the Biobus co-ordinator. He is an active member of the Biobus and Carbon Zero Team at Green School Bali and is passionate about maximising the educational potential of these social enterprises.

Kyle’s holistic approach to education has developed programs and practices that have helped students reach soaring heights academically while making immediate and meaningful impacts community. Kyle is current Co-Principal at The Harbour School and formerly Head of High School at Green School and Executive Director of the Bio Bus Social Enterprise.

I would hope to see consciousness around consumption shift to influence individual decision making that reflects a more sustainable world.

Lawrence Kwok manages corporate communications, media relations, external stakeholder engagement, corporate reputation and corporate social responsibility performance for Shell in Hong Kong and Macau. Prior to his current role, Lawrence had over 15 years of business experience in sales, operations, marketing and business development.

My Sustainability Goals for 2022:

To equip more young people in Hong Kong with critical thinking, complexity analysis and problem solving skills which are essential in meeting the society’s increasing demand for energy whilst reducing carbon emissions.

Thomas joined ASB Biodiesel in 2017 and has been a Chief executive officer since January 2018 and Director of the company since March 2022. He actively responds to global environmental development by promoting the company’s sustainable clean energy – biodiesel locally and internationally. He holds a Master’s degree in EMBA from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and has rich experience in business management.
