Muuse: Transforming Consumption Behaviours in Hong Kong with Innovative Reusable Cup Solution

Muuse and Starbucks’ Sustainable Partnership in Hong Kong

In April 2023, Starbucks launched the “Borrow a Cup” program in Hong Kong, collaborating with Muuse to promote sustainability by reducing single-use cups waste. Starbucks customers can borrow and return reusable cups through the Muuse platform at 34 stores in Hong Kong, which is expected to grow to 50 stores by the end of 2025.

How it works: Customers simply scan a unique QR code on each cup to borrow it for free, earning a discount on their drink. The Muuse platform tracks each cup and sends reminders to return it at one of the 34 participating stores. To date, over 86,000 reusable cups have been borrowed, significantly contributing to Starbucks’ waste reduction goals.

Customer-centric reuse: Given that ease and convenience are crucial to eliminate common barriers to adoption, Muuse provides an easily accessible platform for customers to borrow and return cups for free, without requiring a deposit, simplifying the process for both customers and vendors.

How Muuse removes adoption barriers: Customers can quickly set up an account by scanning the QR code on the cup, completing just two steps to set up an account & attach a payment method with their e-wallets or credit card that acts as a guarantee. They’re ready to borrow within 30 seconds!
