In today’s world, disparities in access to resources are increasingly spotlighted, with gaps widening. Social equity affects everyone, impacting access to opportunities based on our backgrounds and identities. According to the UN, 71% of the global population lives in countries where inequality has grown, affecting diverse groups such as age, gender, and race.
The EY Experience
The EY Belonging Barometer survey reveals that many feel lonely and lack belonging, impacting wellbeing. Particularly affected are those with disabilities and the LGBT+ community. Previous EY research shows that over a third of workers feel their greatest sense of belonging at work, highlighting the role organizations play in fostering inclusivity.
Storytelling has been pivotal, as research indicates stories are remembered up to 22 times more than facts alone. At EY, we’ve prioritised social equity within our DE&I efforts, using storytelling to build awareness and challenge systemic barriers. EY’s Uplift campaign shares colleagues’ experiences, shedding light on barriers they face. We are also leveraging on initiatives like the Global Social Equity Taskforce (GSET) and DE&I measurement tools to spark conversations and hold ourselves accountable, ultimately advancing social equity globally.
Your Turn
To advance social equity in your organisation, it’s crucial to listen actively and address hidden inequities. By fostering inclusive leadership, encouraging open dialogue, and implementing equitable processes in areas like pay and promotions, companies can create environments where everyone thrives. Through collective effort and commitment, we can build workplaces that truly reflect the diversity and potential of all individuals.
