The Case for Birdwatching: Enhancing Community Wellbeing and Engagement

In recent years, there has been a noticeable increase in interest in birdwatching tours, particularly among individuals with disabilities and those undergoing rehabilitation. This trend presents an opportunity to support less privileged populations in Hong Kong. By facilitating access to nature, we can enhance wellbeing, improve mental health, and strengthen social connections.

Birdwatching is an accessible activity that can be enjoyed almost anywhere—urban parks, built-up areas, and the countryside—and requiring only our eyes and ears. Last year, we organized urban birdwatching events in collaboration with the New Territories West Hospitals Cluster, including Tuen Mun Hospital and Pok Oi Hospital. These sessions targeted individuals with dementia, diabetes, and their caregivers, fostering inclusivity and community.

Led by experienced members of The Hong Kong Birdwatching Society Crested-Bulbul Club, these sessions not only provided participants with valuable educational insights but also connected them to role models within the community. The senior tutors shared their knowledge and personal experiences, inspiring participants to embrace outdoor activities. Feedback from attendees indicated a newfound appreciation for the birds they encounter in their daily lives, showcasing the profound impact of such initiatives. Incorporating birdwatching into community programs fosters inclusivity by bringing together individuals from diverse backgrounds. Participants not only enjoy nature but also enhance their mental wellbeing and social interactions, leading to lasting friendships and stronger support networks, especially important among senior citizens in our aging population.

We hope birdwatching can promote personal development and enrich our community, creating a more connected and compassionate society where everyone feels valued and included.
