With Hong Kong’s plastic ban set to target takeout in its second phase, foodpanda was keen to offer innovative solutions to reduce single-use packaging for our restaurant partners. As part of this goal, foodpanda Hong Kong launched Hong Kong’s first reusable food packaging pilot in October 2022, in collaboration with the World Wide Fund for Nature-Hong Kong (WWF-HK) and supported by the Environment and Conservation Fund (ECF). In Phase 1 of the pilot, we delivered meals, ordered from the foodpanda app, with over 14,000 reusable containers to customers, indicating this number of single-use containers were prevented from being sent to the landfill. This achievement would not have been possible without our Phase 1 partners – spanning from restaurants to property developers, corporate supporters, to our different operation partners such as Gate Group Solutions – our prestige cleaning partner for the containers. We sincerely welcome more to join us on our journey in eliminating the use of single-use containers.
With ECF’s approval, we are delighted to be able to continue the pilot for another year. In Phase 2, we are looking to continue scaling up the pilot by placing three additional reusable packaging collection machines, expanding the choices of restaurants, and exploring new models that ride on our current resources. One example of a model we are piloting is a container rental model, where companies can promote the habit of bringing reusable containers to restaurants for takeout to their employees. As a green partner to drive plastic-free dining culture and with a well established circulation system on reusable containers, foodpanda is able to provide, collect, clean and restock the containers for the companies. Apart from this, we also work with corporates to offer catering solutions in reusable containers, as well as lunch-and-learn sharings on ESG and sustainability.
