Hong Kong has one of the highest waste generation rates per capita in the world and our landfills are rapidly approaching capacity, with these facts in hand, it is imperative for government, businesses and organisations to take action as we strive towards a waste-free future. Arguably, these actions should be considered in the first place to reduce consumption as much as possible, which are much more efficient than downstream recycling solutions.
Learnings
- How can we systematically and effectively reduce wastage from every aspect of business operations.
- What are the key principles for businesses to take to mainstream circular economy in operations
- Can circular economy practice by businesses lead to positive impact to our environment and society?
Post-event actions
- Understand the importance of embedding circular economy principles in business plans and sustainability strategies.

Mr Edwin Lau is currently the Founder and Executive Director of The Green Earth, an environmental organization promoting resource conservation and zero-waste culture. He has been actively engaged in environmental protection work since the late 1980s. During the period, he placed great concern on several pressing environmental topics, e.g. waste management, air pollution, climate change and energy conservation.
Mr Lau is currently a member of CUHK Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change Expert Committee and senior advisor of Hong Kong Solar Industries Association.
In 2009, Mr Lau was awarded the Medal of Honour by the HKSAR Government in recognition of his long-term contribution to the promotion of environmental protection and environmental education. In the same year, he was also awarded an Outstanding Earth Champion by The Earth Champions Foundation.
My Sustainability Goals for 2024:
- Shelving the waste-charging scheme does not mean the city’s waste crisis has gone, instead, we must act stronger in avoiding waste generation at source and followed by practising clean recycling to genuinely address the waste crisis.
- Hong Kong should do more in enhancing the building energy efficiency of the entire building stock.
- Renewable energy, including Green Hydrogen, should be developed much faster to supply the city with zero-carbon renewables to cope with the increasing demand, otherwise even with faster transition to electric transport would not contribute much in decarbonisation.
- We need to educate the public a lot more to raise their environmental awareness so that the majority of the population will act green continuously.

As we explore sustainable manufacturing practices and reducing waste in Hong Kong, it is important to consider the role or innovation and how we are progressing the redesign process, as a produce design will significantly affect its reparability, reusability and recyclability.
The panel will explore innovative manufacturing practices, that can reduce waste and increase resource efficiency. The discussion will also touch on the role of product design in promoting circularity, including the use of sustainable materials and the incorporation of end-of-life considerations in the design process.
Learnings
- What are some successful examples of circular design/manufacturing processes in Hong Kong?
- How can designers and manufacturers incorporate end-of-life considerations into the design process and create products that can have an extended life span?
Post-event actions
- Accelerate the mindset shift to adopt eco- or sustainable design and prepare to meet consumers’ expectations.
- Re-evaluate existing manufacturing processes to identify alternative greener alternatives.

(中文版本議程可供查閱,請往下拉至最底)
The pandemic has brought on unforeseen changes in the retail industry. In the past three years, we have seen changes in consumer behaviour, where they have become increasingly demanding with the ease of purchasing while at the same time preferring to interact with brands that care for people and the environment. This programme looks to advance the circular economy discussion in the retail industry, discussing how each segment minimises waste, keep materials and products in circulation along their business models.

Our purpose – Opening up a world of opportunity – explains why we exist. We’re here to use our unique expertise, capabilities, breadth and perspectives to open up new kinds of opportunity for our customers. We’re bringing together the people, ideas and capital that nurture progress and growth, helping to create a better world – for our customers, our people, our investors, our communities and the planet we all share.
Our sustainability goals for 2024:
“We’re focused on helping to deliver a net zero global economy. It’s a pillar of our strategy as a business.”
In 2020, we set an ambition to become a net zero bank by 2050 and since then we have announced several significant policies and ambitions around climate and the transition. In January this year, we published our first Net Zero Transition Plan – setting out our strategic vision and approach to net zero.
We want to make financing choices that can lead to a meaningful impact on emissions reduction in the real economy, not just in our portfolio. Achieving this requires engagement with our clients and customers on their transitions to help finance decarbonisation in the sectors and regions with the most change ahead.
We believe we can do this best by promoting change in three key areas that play to our strengths as an organisation and can help deliver a broader impact on decarbonisation in the real economy: transitioning industry, catalysing the new economy, and decarbonising trade and global supply chains.
