MTR’s smart accessibility initiatives create more inclusive journeys for all

As a provider of public transport services for all, social inclusion lies at the heart of MTR’s values and mission. By embedding accessibility into new station design, providing barrier-free facilities and leveraging digital innovation, we are empowering passengers of all ages and abilities to travel with greater confidence, independence and ease.

Since its launch in 2022, the MTR • Care App has been helping elderly passengers and passengers with special needs enjoy more independent and seamless journeys across the railway network. Designed with accessibility and user experience in mind, the app provides practical support tailored to diverse passenger needs. Features such as In-Station Navigation enable visually impaired passengers to navigate stations more confidently, while Wheelchair Portable Ramp Booking makes it easier for wheelchair users to access assistance. In addition, the Non-emergency Call for Assistance function, now deployed across all stations, enables hearing-impaired passengers to communicate with station staff whenever assistance is required. By continually enhancing the app based on passenger feedback, MTR is leveraging technology to create a more inclusive and accessible travel experience for all.

In parallel, Giant Lift Signage has been introduced at selected stations to make lifts easier to locate, benefiting passengers who require barrier-free access, including wheelchair users, elderly passengers and families travelling with young children. These enhancements make station navigation more intuitive and further promote an inclusive and user-friendly travel experience.
