Schindler elevates Mactan – Cebu International Airport

Passengers flying into Cebu are greeted by an airport that already feels like a tropical destination. Intentionally crafted to feel warm and welcoming and covering an area of 65,000 square meters, Terminal 2 serves the airport’s international flights. Its wave-like roof made of arched timber and a white concrete terrazzo flooring embedded with mother-of-pearl – both inspired by the surrounding beaches and sea – hint at the island waiting just outside.

Sustainable, excellent design

The Mactan–Cebu International Airport has two main terminals with a combined capacity of just under 20 million passengers annually. With so many people moving through the airport, the seven elevators and six escalators in Terminal 1, and 15 elevators and 11 escalators in Terminal 2 need to be always up and running.

The Schindler team takes care of 17 Schindler 9300 escalators and 22 Schindler 5500 elevators throughout the airport’s two terminals.

The team was involved in the project long before the second terminal opened in 2018 – helping with the layout plans and coordinating with other teams on-site using Building Information Modelling (BIM) to deliver a well-ordered and organized installation.

Schindler’s energy-efficient units also play their role in helping the airport meet its sustainability goals, complementing the terminal’s solar-responsive architecture, designed to maximize natural light while keeping the building cool.

A professional long-term partnership
To ensure downtime is kept to a minimum, there are four technicians on-site – day and night. This means the Schindler team can offer immediate assistance around the clock, addressing any issues that might arise.

Today, the Schindler team’s dedication reflects our purpose, trust, and growth in delivering our service. “Over the years, we’ve remained steadfast partners, ensuring that the airport’s escalators and elevators continue to serve millions of travelers safely and reliably,” says Royce.
