Khairul Nizam

Technologist Khairul (Khai) Nizam is the Global Scheme Owner for Sustainability and Traceability at BSI, where he leads the design and global rollout of carbon and sustainability certification schemes, including the Global Product Carbon Footprint scheme (aligned to ISO 14067) and the Carbon Neutrality Kitemark (ISO 14068-1). His work sits at the intersection of product-level carbon accounting and the supply chains that generate those emissions, giving him direct insight into how Scope 3 data moves between suppliers, manufacturers, and buyers.

Khai brings more than 10 years of experience across sustainability engineering, research, and scheme management, working with organisations across APAC, EMEA, and beyond to translate carbon reduction commitments into verifiable, auditable standards. Through his role at BSI, he regularly engages various teams to embed credible carbon criteria into product claims, helping organisations move from voluntary carbon ambition to certifiable, defensible performance.

His career began in engineering and construction, before moving into research with the Construction Research Institute of Malaysia (CREAM) and later the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), where he helped shape sustainability practices within Malaysia’s construction and built environment sector, an experience that grounds his understanding of multi-tier supply networks and the practical trade-offs between cost, quality, and decarbonisation.

Beyond his professional role, Khai is an active contributor to the sustainability conversation, having published articles on carbon reduction, waste management, and circular economy practices, and advocating for green public procurement and resilient, low-carbon supply chains.

In short, Khai is a global sustainability leader, driving the standards and schemes that hold organisations accountable for the carbon in their supply chains, and helping businesses worldwide turn sourcing decisions into verifiable climate action.

1. I would love to see Hong Kong’s supply chains move from voluntary carbon disclosure to verified, product-level carbon data, so businesses and consumers alike can trust the numbers behind every “low-carbon” claim.

2. My hope is that more Hong Kong organisations embed carbon criteria into supplier scorecards and contracts.

3. I would like to see Hong Kong become a leading voice in Asia for trusted, internationally recognised sustainability standards, helping suppliers across the region access the same playing field as global manufacturers.
