Recycling is often the first thing people associate with the circular economy. In reality, it is one of the final steps.
Circular thinking begins much earlier. It asks businesses to prevent waste at its source, choose materials responsibly, extend the useful life of products and design systems that use fewer resources from the outset.
At Mystic Island Winery, this thinking influences decisions across our operations. We use PEFC-certified barrels sourced from responsibly managed forests, lightweight bottles that require fewer materials and less energy to transport, and recycled materials in our product packaging.
However, individual products are only part of the picture. The design of our estate also supports a more efficient use of resources. Our gravity-fed winery reduces unnecessary mechanical handling, while thoughtful production flows help limit avoidable movement and energy consumption. In the vineyard, regenerative practices focus on renewing the natural systems upon which wine production depends.
These choices may appear small when considered separately. Their value becomes clearer when they form part of a connected approach—from sourcing and design to production, packaging and eventual recovery.
A truly circular business does not begin by asking how to dispose of something more responsibly. It first asks whether waste can be avoided, whether fewer resources can be used and whether materials can remain valuable for longer.
