A vineyard’s most important work often happens out of sight. Beneath every vine lies a living system of soil, roots and microorganisms that supports the health of the vineyard and influences the character of its fruit.
At Mystic Island Winery, caring for this system is central to our approach to regenerative vineyard management. We use natural fertiliser and grow cover crops between the vines to help improve soil structure, retain moisture and support biodiversity. By reducing chemical intervention wherever possible, we aim to maintain the natural balance of the vineyard rather than working against it.
Healthy soil also helps vines become more resilient. A strong root system allows vines to respond more effectively to changing weather conditions, while biologically active soil supports the long-term productivity of the land. These benefits cannot be achieved through a single season or initiative. Regeneration requires patience, observation and a willingness to think beyond the next harvest.
This approach is particularly important because wine is an agricultural product shaped by its place of origin. The distinctive soils and landscape of Qiushan Valley are not simply a backdrop to our work; they are fundamental to the identity of our wines.
For us, producing expressive, estate-grown wine begins long before grapes reach the winery. It begins by protecting and renewing the living soil beneath our vines—so the vineyard can remain healthy, balanced and resilient for generations to come.
