MTR is committed to embedding ESG considerations into its business and operations and has established three environmental and social objectives: Social Inclusion, Advancement and Opportunities, and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions Reduction to create long-term value for all stakeholders.
In terms of Social Inclusion, MTR aspires to foster a diverse and inclusive work environment while actively promoting equal opportunities. In 2023, MTR introduced the EmpowerZ traineeship pilot programme to unlock the potential of individuals from ethnically diverse backgrounds or those with disabilities.
MTR also partners with non-governmental organisations and social enterprises to promote an inclusive and sustainable society. MTR collaborated with New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association to introduce Mindfulness Exercises through MTR Mobile, reminding passengers to take care of their well-being through mindfulness practices.
Regarding Advancement and Opportunities, MTR works closely with local schools, universities, startups and the technology ecosystem to enhance the skills and innovative capacity of the future generations. The brand-new “’Train’ for Life’s Journeys 2.0” programme is designed to equip the next generation with essential future skills and innovation capacity through a series of training, workshops and a Social Innovation Challenge, encouraging participants to explore various social inclusion topics and develop innovative solutions.
In the realm of GHG Emissions Reduction, MTR has set its 2030 science-based targets and is working towards achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. MTR incorporates green features and energy-efficient measures into the planning, design, construction and operation of its railway network and properties, while also supporting the development of renewable energy in Hong Kong.
