Towngas Builds a Comprehensive Green Methanol Value Chain to Drive Decarbonisation Across the Global Shipping Industry

Facing the challenges of global climate change, emission reduction across the shipping industry has become an inevitable trend. In support of Hong Kong’s development as a green maritime fuel bunkering centre, Towngas is striving to build a comprehensive green methanol value chain.

At the core of thisinitiative, the Group produces green methanol in Inner Mongolia utilising biomass resources and municipal waste, achieving a 70% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on a life-cycle basis. VENEX, a joint venture between the Group and Foran Energy, operates the Inner Mongolia plant and is currently constructing additional production lines in Foshan, within the Greater Bay Area, to expand capacity. The combined annual capacity of the two plants is expected to reach 500,000 tonnes by 2028.
Reflecting its high quality and sustainabilitystandards, Towngas’ green methanol has secured multiple international certifications.

This achievement makes Towngas the first green methanol producer on the Chinese mainland to attain both ISCC EU and ISCC PLUS certifications, alongsidethe TÜV SÜD Product Carbon Footprint Verification Statement.

Building on these achievements, Towngas was invited earlier this month to a United Nations conference to share its innovative practices of producing green methanol from waste desert shrubs—an initiative that promotes local desertification control and a community circular economy—demonstrating its ongoing support for the development of sustainable transport energy.

By delivering internationally certified green methanol products, Towngas remains dedicated to championing the sustainable future of global shipping.
