Swire Coca-Cola HK (SCCHK) has once again blended upcycling and corporate social responsibility in its waste management regime. In the “‘Coca-Cola’ and the Bottle of Secrets” exhibition at The Mills, Tsuen Wan that SCCHK organised in June, the old returnable glass bottle crates were given a “second life” not only to transform the exhibition space at The Mills, but they were also turned into various sustainable items designed by students from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University School of Design, one of which is the “REDcognise” clips that aid the visually impaired in identifying daily objects. The clips were made using 3D printing techniques after the old returnable glass bottle crates were pelletised and transformed into 3D printing filaments.
Before delivering to the beneficiaries at the Hong Kong Society for the Blind, the clips were packed into pouches upcycled from SCCHK old uniforms and sewn by staff volunteers. The project is one of the many waste reduction efforts of SCCHK to upcycle unused or obsolete items that would otherwise end up in landfills. This time, the upcycled items carry special meaning of social inclusion.
