At MTR, innovation enables sustainable development by leveraging technology to enhance customer experience, strengthen operations, and support our Environmental and Social Objectives.
A remarkable showcase of innovation is the Capital Works Integration Lab (CWIL), which is redefining railway project delivery through an innovative mindset. As MTR’s first-of-its-kind “Virtual Station”, CWIL enables around 60% of integrated station systems testing to be conducted off-site before civil construction is completed. Real station systems are assembled, connected, tested and integrated in a controlled environment, transforming the traditional “civil works first, station systems later” approach.
By bringing project teams and contractors together, CWIL identifies system interface issues early, validates performance and enhances efficiency before station systems are delivered to site. This innovative approach lays the foundation for a future “Virtual Railway”, enabling smarter, more efficient and higher-quality railway project delivery.
Innovation is also enhancing the passenger experience. The AI Station Hotline provides customers with instant assistance in Cantonese, English and Mandarin, helping them access information on trip planning, ticketing and fares, and station facilities, etc. When needed, enquiries are seamlessly transferred to Station Control Room, combining technological innovation with personalised service to create a more inclusive and responsive travel experience.
To support safe and efficient travel during major events, MTR has developed the Intelligent Crowd Diversion System, which leverages AI and video analytics to monitor passenger flows in real time and facilitate targeted crowd management measures. The award-winning solution enhances operational efficiency, supports informed decision-making, and improves passenger safety, convenience and overall journey experience.
