
Heat inside a parked or moving vehicle is one of the most persistent, energy-intensive problems in mobility — traditionally solved only by burning more power on air-conditioning. i2Cool is tackling it differently, drawing inspiration from the Saharan silver ant, whose hair structure reflects sunlight and emits absorbed heat through the atmospheric window, keeping the ant cool in desert temperatures of 60–70°C.
i2Cool has adapted this mechanism into its Electricity-free Cooling Whole-Vehicle Solution, combining three i2Automotive products across a vehicle’s body paint, windows and cabin leather. With solar reflectance and mid-infrared emissivity both reaching up to 95%, the system cools 10–15°C more effectively than conventional insulation at a comparable cost — with no electricity and no emissions.


Real-vehicle trials conducted with a major automaker in Sanya and Foshan validated the results: seat surfaces measured 17°C cooler, front-windshield solar irradiance reduced from 409.2 W/m² to 185.7 W/m² after film application, and exterior paint surfaces cooled by up to 8.09°C — reductions that translate directly into lower air-conditioning load for both electric and conventional vehicles.
The solution’s impact was recognised on 29 June 2026, when i2Cool received the Excellence Award at the HKMA/HKT Global Innovation Award in Hong Kong — following i2Cool’s earlier inclusion in KPMG’s Intelligent Manufacturing Technology 50 and the 2026 APAC Cleantech 25 list.
As new energy vehicles scale across Asia, i2Cool sees passive, power-free thermal management as a practical near-term lever for cutting transport-related energy demand.
