Showcasing nearly 200 real-world projects from diverse infrastructure sectors and environments worldwide, the “Playbook for Nature-Positive Infrastructure Development” highlights the transformative potential of integrating nature-based solutions (NbS) into infrastructure projects.
Announced at COP28 as a new initiative aimed at advancing sustainable urban development, the Playbook is the result of a collaborative effort between AECOM, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC), providing practitioners with a comprehensive array of NbS that place nature at the core of infrastructure design.
This nature-positive approach encourages engineers, architects, and developers to move beyond merely reducing environmental impacts. It emphasizes the importance of integrating ecosystem viability, biodiversity, and climate goals into their designs. This strategy addresses multiple challenges in Hong Kong, such as urban heat islands and coastal flooding, while enhancing residents’ quality of life.
AECOM prioritizes nature-positive impacts in its projects, from rejuvenating wetlands in Hong Kong to reforestation in Bintan and coastal protection in Lower Manhattan. We place the conservation and restoration of natural ecosystems at the heart of our infrastructure designs.
Additionally, by quantifying the benefits of NbS and integrating these advantages into decision-making, natural capital approaches strengthen the case for nature conservation and attract more financing opportunities, fostering a sustainable framework for delivering high-performance habitats.
In June 2024, this Playbook was awarded the Nature Positive Award at the Environment Analyst Sustainability Delivery Awards 2024, and was shared by the Asian Development Bank in its ADB Knowledge Event webinar. Discover more about the Playbook here.
