In March 2022, Nespresso was certified as a B Corporation, joining an international movement of 4,500 purpose-led businesses that meet B Corp’s high standards of social and environmental responsibility and transparency – including Patagonia, Chloé, and The Body Shop.
The announcement is a marker for the positive impact Nespresso has made in the coffee industry and beyond since the brand was founded in 1986. Key contributing elements include its unique approach to coffee sourcing – through the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality™ Program, designed in partnership with the Rainforest Alliance – its strategic alliance with Fairtrade, and the brand’s global recycling scheme for its aluminium capsules. These are complemented at the local level, such as Nespresso Hong Kong and Macau’s capsule recycling programme efforts to promote farming initiatives in Hong Kong.
Guillaume Le Cunff, Nespresso CEO, said: “B Corp certification reflects a 30-year Nespresso commitment to sustainability, transparency and responsible business. We are immensely proud to be joining a community of like minds who share our belief that profit and purpose go hand-in-hand. This certification brings added value for our customers and affirms to Nespresso fans that their favourite coffee brand is doing business the right way. Most importantly, B Corp certification inspires us to do more. It strengthens our commitment to our vision that every cup of Nespresso coffee has a positive impact on the world.”
Justin Lam, Nespresso Hong Kong and Macau Business Executive Officer, said: “Our global efforts must be backed by local action. That is why our sustainability vision is integral to the way we operate in Hong Kong and Macau, such as our local recycling programme incorporating aluminium upcycling and using recycled Nespresso coffee grounds as compost, and partnerships with other local businesses and organisations to promote sustainability in Hong Kong.”
