My Sustainability Goals for 2024:

Nalini Dhiman

CUHK Business School

Student

Nalini Dhiman is an advocate for creating shared value. At the crux, CSV is about economic and societal value going hand in hand. Pursuing a BBA degree specializing in Big Data and Quantitative Marketing, she is dedicated to driving positive change at the intersection of business and society.

She grew up in Hong Kong and India; one, the junction between the East and the West, a finance powerhouse, and the other, a growing economy bursting with innovation and ideas. This unique exposure has played a significant role in shaping her lens on the importance of sustainability.

Right now, it is the youth who can drive change. But we need to be educated, we need a platform to share ideas, and we need to come together to take little steps. Until one day those little steps become big strides.

Nalini’s interests are in creating shared value, peaceful and strong social justice, and youth education. At ReThink, she looks forward to being a part of ideation such that everyone, especially youth, leaves inspired to build sustainable solutions.

My sustainability goals for 2024:

Hong Kong has been most active in the corporate sustainable finance space, with an APAC lead in sustainability-linked loans and ESG ETF flows. It is therefore evident that corporations are driving the sustainability force in Hong Kong, especially in the green space.

Personally, then, I want to see and be a part of the following goals for Hong Kong in 2024 – 2025:

Enhanced youth education
They are the drivers of tomorrow, our future leaders. I want to see a greater focus on educating our youth, especially those who are from marginalized backgrounds, lower socio-economic brackets, single-parent families, etc. Equipping them with knowledge about the world, soft skills, hard skills, and critical thinking from an early age empowers them to make informed decisions about the world as they grow.

Increased organizational partnerships
We can see the greatest result in public education and material impact when organizations come together. For instance, three leading companies in Hong Kong, spanning different industries, launched a diversity internship program for underprivileged students which allowed them to set their ambitions in motion. The force of more is always larger than the force of one. I advocate for more cross-industry collaborations involving educational institutions, corporations, NGOs, and the Government.

My sustainability goals for 2024:

My sustainability goals are to inspire and equip the next generation with the knowledge, skills, and determination to make sustainable choices and become leaders on fostering a more sustainable future. In addition to my commitment in business case writing about sustainability, innovation and climate change, I hope I can engage in more collaborative efforts with organizations and academics for sharing knowledge and best practices in sustainability.

Integrating the STEAM Model for the Next Generations of Sustainability Practitioners

11:35 – 12:25

Conventionally, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) has been the foundation of secondary education, providing comprehensive learning. The recent integration of the Arts (STEAM) has complemented this analytical focus, creating a more well-rounded educational model. This STEAM approach can be equally impactful in the corporate realm, driving sustainable transformation and workforce development. As organizations navigate the challenges of the journey toward carbon neutrality, the STEAM model offers a strategic advantage. By fostering creativity, critical thinking, and innovation, in addition to technical skill development, the STEAM framework facilitates a more holistic approach to addressing sustainability initiatives.

This session aims to showcase the importance of the STEAM approach in cultivating the essential skills required to tackle pressing sustainability challenges across environmental, economic, and social domains. By leveraging both analytical and creative capabilities, the STEAM model equips individuals and organizations with the problem-solving skills and holistic development approach needed to drive sustainable progress.

Moreover, this session aims to initiate a conversation on possible collaborations that businesses can pursue to integrate the STEAM model into their workforce development strategies. Exploring how a STEAM-integrated workforce can more efficiently drive sustainability innovation and decarbonization efforts, by nurturing a diverse, adaptable, and future-ready talent pool.

Learnings:

  • How does a STEAM approach enhance the quality of the workforce in sustainability careers?
  • How does STEAM empower and propel sustainability innovation in organisations?
  • How and what collaborations can businesses explore to integrate a STEAM model to foster a sustainable workforce?

Post-Event Actions:

  • Reflect on and revise your organisation’s requirements for talent and alignment of in-house education and training programmes.
  • Consider the composition of teams working on developing or incorporating sustainable solutions. How can the composition of such teams be diversified in a way that would drive innovation?
  • Explore collaborations to integrate a STEAM model for sustainable workforce development.

Tommie Lo

Preface

Founder & CEO

Preface is a pioneering EdTech company that revolutionises education for both corporates and individuals by harnessing state-of-the-art Blockchain and AI-based infrastructure. By decentralising content creation and delivery, Preface empowers learners with the most current and relevant tech education and training, ensuring they stay at the forefront of industry trends and technological advancements.

As founder and CEO, Tommie leads Preface in disrupting traditional education through re-engineering content creation and re-designing the concept of classrooms. His profound technical expertise and entrepreneurial insights have garnered recognition from esteemed academic institutions and global corporations, including Google, Meta, HSBC, and Samsung, who seek his expertise in leading training programs.

My sustainability goals for 2024:

1. Thinking Beyond Content Delivery:

Recognising the widening technology gaps that the then-education system was struggling to fill, Preface expanded its offerings to provide a broader scope of technology training, beyond just coding, for both students and adults in schools and corporations.

Rather than just focusing on teaching specific technology skills, the goal should be on how to use these skills to think and solve problems. Using AI doesn’t mean that humans don’t need to think and that the process may involve even more human thinking and evaluation.

2. Linking Learning with Lifestyle:

To make knowledge “drinkable, eatable, and digestible.” By offering technology training using AI-powered learning materials and a more personalised curriculum, the purpose of Tommie’s innovations was to decentralise traditional classroom settings so that learning could happen anywhere, whether it’s at a restaurant, coffee shop, or while traveling.

Building Bridges: A Multigenerational Dialogue on Integrating Sustainability in Corporates

12:25 – 13:15

“Building Bridges: A Multigenerational Dialogue on Integrating Sustainability in Corporates” is a panel discussion consisting of different actors collaborating on corporate sustainability projects – employers and youth employees from the same company, and start-up representatives with their larger corporate clients. Speakers are invited to share their case-studies of success, challenges faced, and advice related to leveraging opinions from youth in corporate settings.

The key takeaways from this session are:
(1) To gain understanding surrounding employer-employee collaboration for implementing systemic sustainability changes through leveraging youth opinions and ideas.
(2) To visualise how green start-ups and their clients can work together to implement change towards sustainability in corporations.
(3) For youth to gain insight into how they can voice their opinions as employees to drive change towards sustainability in their corporate roles.
(4) Showcase how companies can accommodate and be open minded towards youth opinions and ideas in corporate settings.

Learnings

  1. Case-study overview by employer and client (higher corporate) representatives – Tell us about your experience related to initiating corporate sustainability, giving a specific example of multigenerational or interdepartmental collaboration.
  2. Ask employee and start-up representative about the initiation of their respective projects – How was the project initiated? What structures were in place to allow for sustainability related discussions?
  3. Identify pain-points, or past and present challenges, in executing sustainability initiatives – What challenges have you faced, or are you currently facing, in initiating and executing corporate sustainability initiatives
  4. Identify key factors for successful implementation of sustainability initiatives – What were the key factors, dynamics or structures that led towards successful implementation of sustainability projects at a corporate level?
  5. Future outlook and advice for both youth in corporate settings, and for corporates looking to implement sustainability, emphasising the importance of multigenerational dialogue on sustainability in corporate settings – What advice do you have for youth attempting to step up within their companies to initiate sustainability projects? What advice do you have for other corporations looking to implement sustainability? Why is it important to create spaces for youth to speak up in corporate settings?

Post-Event Actions

Network of Environmental Student Societies

Event Team Officer

Iyla is a second-year student at the University of Hong Kong studying a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences, with a focus in Sustainability and Politics. Iyla previously studied at United World College Thailand, founding an environmental advocacy and beach cleaning organization and working on a provincial plastic-bag ban alongside the Phuket government. Through the youth-led organization, she managed and curated events to educate others about the importance of waste management to combat plastic pollution. Now, Iyla is a member of the NESS events team, collaborating on events such as the BEC x NESS Green Jobs Fair and Hong Kong Climate Emergency Summit, promoting climate literacy and career pathways in sustainability for Hong Kong youth.

My sustainability goals for 2024:

Overconsumption is a huge issue in Hong Kong, leading to excess waste and pollution. Recent trips to Sai Kung’s remote beaches have left me devastated, white sand barely visible underneath mounds of washed-up plastic waste. While ocean currents can transport others’ waste to our shores, it is a harsh reminder that disposal of waste does not equate to disappearance. While I am excited to see the potential impact of the new MSW charging scheme, I hope to see not only greater awareness about the volume of waste we produce individually, but for corporations to take responsibility for the waste they enable. I hope to see an accelerated transition towards low-impact, biodegradable packaging for businesses, and an increasing effort to prioritise environmentally conscious production to reduce stress on landfills.

Analyzing Through a Value Creation Lens: Insights from Rising Change Makers

15:05 – 15:55

Sustainability is traditionally viewed as a cost centre, with sceptics withholding their buy-in and support, thus resulting in minimal efforts being poured into their companies’ sustainability journeys. It is imperative that a more innovative and youth perspective be adopted, traditional norms challenged, and greenwashing curbed to contribute to Hong Kong’s Net Zero goals in a commercial environment. Within this movement, youths play a critical role in uncovering hidden values, tackling obstacles and proposing practical strategies for integrating sustainability into business operations.

With a focus on revealing the often-overlooked benefits of sustainable practices and addressing the challenges faced by SMEs, this session aims to spark innovative solutions driven by the creative mindset and critical thinking of younger generations. Highlighting the importance of adopting a value creation lens, to define the impacts and merits of sustainability. Overall, our speakers will provide their actionable insights to leverage the energy and enthusiasm of youth in driving sustainability and innovation within their organizations, fostering a more resilient and dynamic business landscape.

Learnings:

  • How can youths cultivate innovation and critical thinking to advance sustainability within small and medium sized enterprises and startups?
  • How can we address the perception of sustainability as a cost center for SMEs and instead, promote investment for success?
  • How do we uncover and highlight the hidden benefits and opportunities that sustainable practices offer to SMEs through a value creation lens, particularly attracting talent and enhancing competitiveness?

Post-Event Actions:

  • Reflect on how your company views sustainability and its integration into business strategies
  • Rethink how sustainability can be used as an asset to further your business goals
  • Re-assess validity of existing sustainability initiatives and combat potential greenwashing schemes
